Chris (DJ)> Welcome back to Japan, Sheryl.
Sheryl> Thank you.
DJ> How's your visit been so far?
Sheryl> Great. It's been so good.
DJ> Yeah, I caught your show the other night at the Tokyo Kokusai Forum.
Sheryl> Uh huh. Great Place.
DJ> Yeah. Isn't it?
Sheryl> Really Great Place. We've had two really wonderful nights there.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> Very early gigs.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> Earlier than we are used to.
DJ> Right.
Sheryl> But fun.
DJ> Yeah. Usually what time would you guys go on?
Sheryl> About nine.
DJ> About nine?
Sheryl> Nine fifteen.
DJ> Yeah. And people had a few drinks you know, had dinner.
Sheryl> (smile)
DJ> But it was before that kind of situation, huh?
Sheryl> Uh, yeah. We were sort of the afternoon tea set.
DJ> (laugh) But it's been a fantastic show. I loved it.
Sheryl> Thank you.
DJ> Yeah great show. How did, how was the club reaction?
Sheryl> I thought it was great. I mean these shows, we sure didn't feel like complaining.
You know, we were not used to having such polite audiences, but now that we've been to Japan a few times, we sort of understand how it works.
DJ> Yeah.
Sheryl> Seemed like they were really into it. So it's a best weekend.
DJ> But there were a lot of ex-pats you know. I mean I'm sure those, a lot of people, lot of...
Sheryl> Yeah there were quite a few.
DJ> Yeah, catcalls.
Sheryl> Looked like Americans.
DJ> Righ right right. Kind of, kind of brought that at-home feeling, huh?
Sheryl> Mmm...
DJ> Not, not really. OK. (both laugh)
Sheryl> We've played here a couple of times when the Americans were actually sort of obnoxious.
DJ> Oh I see.
Sheryl> So they've been, they're alright. They seem to be following the Japanese leads.
DJ> Well. Now you've changed a lot of, how many guitars did you bring along? Quite a few?
Sheryl> I don't know. I have no idea.
DJ> Are you a guitar freak?
Sheryl> Not really.
DJ> No?
Sheryl> Uh huh.
DJ> Because you seem like one.
Sheryl> I used to, I mean we carry as few as we can get away with and they always have a couple of backups and there are some guitars with quite different tunings. So I don't know.
DJ> Yeah. What about, you know, you play bass on couple of songs I guess and think If It Makes You Happy, did you play bass on that or was it a guitar?
Sheryl> No. I play bass ....... this, on this album stuff because I recorded it that way.
DJ> Yeah I see. And why is this with a bass? Just for the hell of it?
Sheryl> No just cause I, those are the, those are the parts I played on the album. And we get ready to rehearse. That's, you know, what I just, that's what I did and and that's what I do.
DJ> Do you like playing the bass?
Sheryl> Yeah I do. Except for I broke my finger when I was working on...
DJ> Really?
Sheryl> Yeah.
DJ> Is that the reason it's all purple and...
Sheryl> It's been all blocked and I had stitches all the way around it.
DJ> Jesus.
Sheryl> So it's made a little trickier ...
DJ> Hmm. Right, I see.
Sheryl> It's really hampering my technique.
DJ> (laugh) It's really bumming your style.
Sheryl> That's right.
DJ> Now, um, I noticed a, I don't know if it's a, it might take a little weirdness towards what I'm about to say.
Sheryl> Uh oh. Careful.
DJ> I know it's a, Bob Dylan, Rollong Stones, are they big people in your lives?
Sheryl> Um.
DJ> Is there some person, you know Bob Dylan..
Sheryl> Um Bob Dylan is my father, I don't know if I ever told you that. And no, um yeah, I mean I grew up listening to Bob certainly and I do one of his songs 'cos he gave me a song for my album.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> And Rolling Stones, I think, have influenced a lot of people of my generation with their music...
DJ> Yeah.
Sheryl> So...
DJ> Yeah. What other musicians do you think influenced you?
Sheryl> Um. I think when I was really young, I was influenced by.......girls, probably influenced by Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt.
DJ> Um
Sheryl> Probably more Linda Ronstadt than anybody.
DJ> Yeah. Uh huh.
Sheryl> And musicianshipwise, I'll always just played, uh, I guess like the people I grew up listening to and probably Keith Richards is one of them.
DJ> Um huh.
Sheryl> Yes that's probably, pretty accurate.
DJ> Yeah. And Guns'n Roses seem a little kind like, you know, different from Sheryl Crow, Guns'n Roses how do I make a connection.
Sheryl> Um huh.
DJ> But I, I really loved your rendition actually and..
Sheryl> Thank you. I mean the reason, the actual reason that I did the Guns'n Roses song because I thought it would be so shocking.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> There would be so many people... "Why is she doing that?" And it's, for me, it's much more fun to do a cover if you're not trying to compete with the original version. Nobody would really expect me to do that. So that was one of the things that kind of enticed me into doing it.
DJ> Yeah. And it's such a great version. Your, your version is a, excellent. It's a...
Sheryl> Well I think it kicks their version...No, I'm kidding.
DJ> (laugh) It really is.
Sheryl> I mean you know, they were such a landmark band in the '80s and would be nowhere if you go and do it. Ah the way they did it does not have comparison. So we tried to make it a little bit different.
DJ> Um yeah. Now, um, you've got a, I guess one night left in Tokyo, I guess tomorrow.
Sheryl> Oh yes, we have one night at Kouzei...
DJ> Kousei Nenkin Kaikan.
Sheryl> Yeah. Hahaha.
DJ> Your Japanese is actually very good like "Suimasen" or just like...
Sheryl> ‚·‚¢‚Ü‚¹`‚ñI
DJ> Yeah. It was right on the mark.
Sheryl> (laugh)
DJ> And what can we expect, are you going to be changing your repertoire a little? From like a...
Sheryl> From the last two nights?
DJ> Yeah.
Sheryl> Well, I'll definitely be playing Sheryl Crow songs.
DJ> Um huh.
Sheryl> So for most part it would just be a difference in the order. And I mean, we for the most part just try to play all the stuff that's familiar.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> And I'm trying to do fair amount of new stuff because it will be awhile before I come back.
DJ> Um huh.
Sheryl> And, like that.
DJ> Right. What are your plans after Japan? Are you gonna...
Sheryl> I'm gonna go home and think about making a new record.
DJ> Uh huh. Yeah. Do you release like once in two years?
Sheryl> Well I don't plan it that way, but that's the way it works out these days. 'Cos they don't really allow you toput out your records, you know, every year.
DJ> Uh huh.
Sheryl> A whole different world now.
DJ> Yeah. Do you write songs, do you just like, collect songs then just go and record? You just like have , you know...
Sheryl> I pretty much write in the studio.
DJ> Um huh.
Sheryl> I don't go...
DJ> Oh really, you don't?
Sheryl> Uh huh.
DJ> So you don't write on the road like a, you usually hear musicians like a, look out the airplane window and strumming the guitar. You're not that type.
Sheryl> That is not me.
DJ> That is Jon Bon Jovi.
Sheryl> That could very well be Jon Bon Jovi. (laugh)
(both laugh)
Sheryl> I'd like to see Jon Bon Jovi with a guitar in first class.
DJ> Yeah, I think there was a video like that before though.
Sheryl> (laugh)
DJ> Yeah. Can you give a message to your Japanese fans?
Sheryl> Sure. What would the message be? Anything I want?
DJ> Anything you want to say.
Sheryl OK. Uh, huh. Hmm. Konbanwa, Tokyo, and Japan. It's been great being here and we always look forward to coming back And we hope you enjoy ed the shows and we will see you in a year or so.
